Padoum was inspired by a series of photographs I took while wandering along Venice Beach. I spotted a man walking his chihuahua and found myself following them down the boardwalk, knowing I wanted to include them in a painting. There's something about those small, unexpected moments that often become the heart of a composition.
Set against the backdrop of Venice's iconic beachfront homes and swaying palms, the painting also features a serene Buddha sculpture, offering a quiet moment of reflection amidst the energy of the scene. I was drawn to the contrast between the calm and the chaotic, the spiritual and the eccentric.
For me, Venice Beach is a place where the unusual feels completely normal and anything seems possible. Padoum celebrates that spirit, capturing the sun-soaked optimism, individuality and unmistakable atmosphere that make it one of my favourite places to paint.
